Australia expelled Iran’s ambassador on 26 Aug 2025. The government said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps planned antisemitic arson attacks in Sydney and Melbourne in 2024. These attacks targeted a synagogue in Melbourne and a kosher cafe in Sydney. No one was hurt. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said intelligence showed a high level of confidence Iran was behind the attacks. Iran denied the claims and warned of a response. Australia also withdrew its ambassador from Iran and will list the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. The government praised its security agencies for tracing the attacks through encrypted messages and cryptocurrency. Opposition parties criticized the government for acting late. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation said some local people were paid to carry out the attacks. The government is working to give security agencies more powers to prevent such threats.
