US consumer confidence fell slightly to 97.4 in August 2025 from 98.7 in July. The drop reflects growing worries about job availability, which declined for the eighth month in a row. The present situation index, measuring views on current business and labour market conditions, also fell to 131.2. Consumers remain less optimistic about future income and job prospects, with the expectations index dropping to 74.8, below the 80 level that often signals a recession. Despite these concerns, some optimism about future business conditions helped limit the decline. The data was released by The Conference Board on 26 Aug 2025. This shows Americans are cautious about the economy as the labour market slows down. (Updated 26 Aug 2025, 23:18 IST; source: link)
