The Supreme Court of India has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations against Anant Ambani's Vantara wildlife facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat, following complaints of animal mistreatment and irregularities in animal acquisition. The SIT, chaired by retired Justice Jasti Chelameswar, will conduct a fact-finding inquiry to ascertain compliance with wildlife protection laws. Vantara, a project of the Reliance Foundation, houses various animals including elephants and operates a large elephant hospital. In response, Vantara issued a statement expressing commitment to transparency, compassion, and full legal compliance, pledging full cooperation with the SIT. The court's order came after public interest litigations raised concerns about the treatment of animals and the role of statutory authorities. Vantara emphasized its mission of rescue, rehabilitation, and care of animals, noting that the transfer of an elephant named Madhuri was done under judicial authority. The investigation aims to clarify the factual position to enable the court to pass further orders. (Updated 26 Aug 2025, 12:50 IST; source: link)
