The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in India has doubled the registration renewal fees for vehicles older than 20 years to encourage scrapping and reduce pollution. The renewal fee for light motor vehicles has increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, for two-wheelers from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, and for three-wheelers and quadricycles from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000. Imported two- or three-wheelers now face a renewal fee of Rs 20,000, while imported four-wheelers or larger vehicles must pay Rs 80,000. This decision, finalized on August 21, 2025, follows a draft amendment issued in February 2025 and builds on a previous fee hike in October 2021. The government aims to promote voluntary scrapping of old vehicles to reduce road pollution. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has recently prohibited strict action against owners of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in the Delhi-NCR region, following a request from the Delhi government to consider actual vehicle usage rather than manufacturing year for retirement policies.
