Supreme Court Schedules Jammu and Kashmir Statehood Plea Hearing For October

The Supreme Court of India on August 25, 2025, declined to advance the hearing date for pleas seeking the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, confirming the matter is scheduled for October 10. The bench, led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and including Justice N.V. Anjaria, noted it is currently engaged with a constitutional bench hearing a presidential reference on timelines for governors and the president. Earlier, on August 14, the court had sought the Centre's response within eight weeks on a separate plea regarding Jammu and Kashmir's statehood restoration. The Supreme Court had unanimously upheld the revocation of Article 370 on December 11, 2023, which removed the region's special status, while ordering assembly elections by September 2024 and restoration of statehood "at the earliest." A separate plea filed last year requested the restoration of statehood within two months. The court emphasized considering ground realities, referencing events in Pahalgam, during earlier proceedings. (Updated 25 Aug 2025, 15:09 IST; source: link)
