Supreme Court Revises Orders by Justice Pardiwala on Dogs, Judges, Environment

In the past month, the Supreme Court of India reversed two major decisions made by a bench led by Justice Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala, prompting intervention by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai. On August 4, Justice Pardiwala's bench removed Allahabad High Court judge Prashant Kumar from hearing criminal cases after he allowed criminal summons in a civil dispute, a decision later softened following CJI Gavai's intervention. On August 11, the bench ordered all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to be relocated to shelters within eight weeks due to concerns over dog bites and rabies, a directive that faced nationwide opposition. Subsequently, on August 22, the Supreme Court withdrew this order, directing that stray dogs be sterilized, vaccinated, and returned to their original locations, except for rabid or aggressive animals which must be sheltered. Additionally, the bench expressed environmental concerns over Himachal Pradesh, warning of severe ecological imbalance potentially erasing the state from the map; this matter was reassigned to a three-judge bench led by Justice Vikram Nath. These developments highlight the Supreme Court's reassessment of Justice Pardiwala's rulings amid judicial scrutiny and public response. (Updated 24 Aug 2025, 18:11 IST; source: link)
