Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) in Madhya Pradesh is progressing as a postgraduate teaching institute with 50 students enrolled in MD, DM, and MCH courses across 17 functional departments. The institute, now under the Indian Council of Medical Research and central government management, has resolved earlier staffing issues and prioritizes treatment for Bhopal gas tragedy victims while serving all patients. BMHRC offers specialties including anesthesiology, microbiology, ophthalmology, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and urology. It has enhanced infrastructure with hi-tech equipment, six dialysis machines (four more planned), and has initiated oncology surgery to expand cancer treatment services. Patient cards for gas victims are issued but are not valid at AIIMS, where victims currently face challenges. Efforts are underway to provide free transportation for gas victims through e-buses or ambulances. The institute’s development into a medical college depends on central government approval, with no current obstacles reported. (Updated 24 Aug 2025, 01:49 IST; source: link)
