CJI Gavai Says Success Comes From Hard Work, Not Exam Ranks

Supreme Court Chief Justice B.R. Gavai stated that exam scores and ranks do not determine a student's success, which is achieved through hard work, dedication, and commitment. Speaking at the golden jubilee ceremony of Goa's V.M. Salgaocar Law College, he shared his own experience of attending college irregularly yet securing third place in the merit list. He noted that his batch topper became a criminal lawyer, the second topper a High Court judge, and he himself became the Chief Justice of India, illustrating that rank alone does not define success. CJI Gavai emphasized the need to strengthen legal education across India beyond just National Law Universities (NLUs) and the CLAT exam, as most students study in other colleges facing challenges in infrastructure and curriculum. He also highlighted the importance of scholarships for tribal students and urged successful lawyers to support them, strengthening the justice system. Additionally, he recalled his moot court experiences and suggested that High Court lawyers could benefit from participating in moot courts to improve their advocacy skills.
