Swraj Paul, born in 1931 in Jullundur, Punjab, was an Indian-born British industrialist and philanthropist who founded the Caparo Group in 1968 after moving to the UK in 1966 for his daughter's medical treatment. Educated at MIT in mechanical engineering, he built Caparo into a major steel manufacturing and distribution business with over 10,000 employees worldwide at its peak. Despite stepping down from management in 1996, his financial legacy remained strong even after the 2015 collapse of Caparo UK. Lord Paul was appointed a life peer in 1996 and was active in politics, business diplomacy, and philanthropy. He chaired the Ambika Paul Foundation, named after his late daughter, donating millions to education and cultural causes, including the University of Wolverhampton and MIT. He lived modestly despite owning luxury properties in London. Swraj Paul died in London on 21 August 2025 at age 94, leaving a legacy in steel, education, and charity.
