The Assam Police registered an FIR against journalist and YouTuber Abhisar Sharma on Thursday following a complaint by Alok Baruah, a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, for allegedly accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of communal politics. The Guwahati Crime Branch filed the case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to acts endangering national unity, promoting enmity between groups, and prejudicial assertions to national integration. Baruah alleged Sharma ridiculed the Union and Assam governments, disparaged the principle of Ram Rajya, and claimed Sarma’s politics was based on Hindu-Muslim polarization, which he said could provoke disorder and portray the state as corrupt and communal. A senior police officer stated the case was filed because Sharma was speaking against the country and its sovereignty. Sharma’s video accused Sarma of spreading religious hatred and running a propaganda campaign against Muslims and madrasas. This FIR follows recent summons issued to journalists from The Wire in separate cases by the Assam Police. Efforts to contact Baruah for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
