Four Calcutta University students were allegedly assaulted near Sealdah railway station in Kolkata after a dispute with shopkeepers who called them “Bangladeshis” for speaking Bengali. The incident began when a student from the university’s Carmichael Hostel attempted to bargain for mobile accessories under the Sealdah bridge and was verbally abused by a Hindi-speaking trader. The student returned with three friends to protest, leading to an altercation during which the students were attacked with rods, sticks, and sharp weapons. The injured students were treated at Medical College and Hospital. They filed a complaint at Muchipara police station, prompting protests by student groups and the pro-Bengali organization Bangla Pokkho. Police have arrested two accused traders and are investigating the case. The incident has drawn attention amid wider concerns about discrimination against Bengali-speaking individuals in some Indian states. The Supreme Court is currently hearing a related petition on the treatment of Bengali-speaking migrants in various states. No further details on the investigation or arrests have been released.
