The Indian National Congress condemned Israel's recent military operations to take over Gaza City and the approval of a settlement project in the West Bank, describing these moves as unacceptable. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that Israel has begun military actions in Gaza and announced plans to expand settlements in occupied territories. The Congress strongly deplored the Modi government's silence on these developments. Israel's military announced the mobilization of tens of thousands of reservists for an expanded operation in Gaza, with Defence Minister Israel Katz approving a new phase targeting densely populated areas. The settlement project in the West Bank, also approved, would effectively divide the territory. Earlier, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused Israel of committing genocide and criticized the Indian government for its silence amid the devastation in Palestine. She cited figures alleging over 60,000 deaths, including more than 18,000 children, and condemned the starvation of hundreds. The Congress has expressed solidarity with Palestinians and continues to raise concerns over Israel's actions in the region. (Updated 21 Aug 2025, 18:31 IST; source: link)
