India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile on August 20, 2025, from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. The Defence Ministry stated the launch validated all operational and technical parameters and was conducted under the Strategic Forces Command. The Agni-5 missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, uses a three-stage solid-fuel engine and can strike targets over 5,000 kilometres away with high accuracy. It forms a key part of India’s nuclear deterrence policy, which includes a commitment to ‘No First Use’. The test follows India’s recent missile trials in 2025, including the Pralay quasi-ballistic and Akash Prime missiles, reflecting ongoing defence modernization and self-reliance efforts. The missile’s capabilities include advanced navigation and guidance systems, and it is designed for rapid deployment from a canisterised platform. The test also aligns with strategic considerations amid evolving regional missile developments. (Updated 20 Aug 2025, 23:13 IST; source: link)
