Andy Evans, a 57-year-old man from Somerset, UK, who became blind and stopped working, has regained independence and employment through AI-powered smart glasses designed by Meta. The glasses, resembling Ray-Bans, feature a camera, speakers, and voice-activated AI that describes surroundings and assists with daily tasks. Evans, registered blind after his sight worsened, left his night shift job at Morrisons supermarket but now works at Sight Support West of England, helping others with sight loss. The glasses have improved his quality of life by enabling activities like ordering food and detecting obstacles. They also offer celebrity voice options, with Evans choosing Dame Judi Dench. Robin Spinks, head of inclusive design at the Royal National Institute of Blind People and also registered blind, praised the glasses for their practical impact and potential as AI technology advances. Evans describes the technology as life-changing and credits it with transforming his daily life and work opportunities. (Updated 20 Aug 2025, 15:04 IST; source: link)
