Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has identified key reasons behind India's poor performance against South Africa in the recently-concluded two-match Test series. The Proteas whitewashed India at home, marking the second such defeat within a year following their 0-3 loss to New Zealand in 2024. Gavaskar praised the preparation of both visiting teams, noting that New Zealand had played in Sri Lanka before arriving in India, while South Africa toured Pakistan in October and their A team gained experience in India beforehand. He criticized India's demanding calendar, particularly the white-ball series played in Australia between Test matches at home. Gavaskar believes India should prioritize their home season and avoid unnecessary travel, similar to how Australia manages their schedule. The ODI series between India and South Africa begins on November 30, followed by five T20 matches from December 9 to December 19.

Preparation and Calendar Management Issues
Gavaskar emphasized that superior preparation by visiting teams contributed significantly to India's defeats. Both New Zealand and South Africa gained valuable experience in subcontinental conditions before facing India. New Zealand played a series in Sri Lanka, while South Africa toured Pakistan in October and sent their A team to India. Gavaskar also criticized India's decision to play ODIs and T20Is in Australia between home Test series, calling it impractical. He suggested India should follow Australia's example and prioritize their home season, refusing to travel during that period. The constant format changes prevented stability for several players, affecting overall performance in the Test series.
