Medical experts acknowledge these practices as part of many households' traditions, offering comfort and self-care during the adjustment period. While the navel does not absorb nutrients, gentle massage and warmth can ease abdominal tightness. However, specialists emphasize that such remedies should complement essential postpartum care like hydration, rest, and gradual strength-building rather than replace them.

Dr Shruti Chandak, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central, explained that postpartum journeys are rarely simple. Many new mothers seek home remedies for comfort and nourishment. Using oils on the navel is a traditional practice in numerous households, providing warmth, relaxation, and relief from dryness. While the navel itself does not absorb nutrients, massage and warmth can help the abdominal area feel calmer. The practice offers psychological benefits through ritual and self-care during the body's adjustment period. However, Dr Chandak cautioned about potential skin reactions, recommending patch testing before full application. Castor oil may cause mild irritation, while ghee generally suits most skin types but can feel greasy. Those with sensitive or acne-prone skin should exercise caution and avoid heavily perfumed oils.
