Filmmaker Anil Sharma has expressed deep sadness over the passing of legendary actor Dharmendra, stating that the planned sequel Apne 2 will now remain an incomplete story. Dharmendra, known for iconic films like Sholay, Satyakam, and Chupke Chupke, died on Monday morning at his Mumbai residence at the age of 89. The original Apne, released in 2007, marked the first on-screen collaboration between Dharmendra and his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. The sequel was announced in 2020 and was set to include grandson Karan Deol. Sharma, who collaborated with Dharmendra on several films including the Gadar series with Sunny Deol, last met the veteran actor a couple of months ago. He fondly recalled Dharmendra's warmth, humility, and the dignity that defined his career spanning decades in Indian cinema.

Filmmaker reflects on unfinished sequel and lasting legacy
Sharma shared his regret that some stories remain unfinished in this world, but emphasized that Dharmendra will always live in memories. The director last met Dharmendra two months ago when the veteran actor inquired about his upcoming projects, including Apne 2 and Gadar 3. Dharmendra encouraged him to develop a good story and expressed his desire to continue making quality films. Sharma's career journey was closely linked with Dharmendra, having worked together on early films like Hukumat, Elaan-E-Jung, Farishtay, and Tahalka. The filmmaker praised Dharmendra's humility despite being a huge star, noting that he always behaved like a common man and never compromised on self-respect, values that continue in the Deol family.
