Tough Road Ahead for India’s WTC Qualification Hopes

2 min read

India's chances of reaching the World Test Championship final for the 2025-2027 cycle appear slim after their 0-2 whitewash by South Africa. Former Test opener Aakash Chopra believes qualification would be a miracle given the current standings. India sit at number five with a concerning 48.15 percent points average, having won four, lost four, and drawn one of their nine matches so far. They trail Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. The team will not play Test cricket until August 2026, when they tour Sri Lanka, followed by a series in New Zealand and five home Tests against Australia in 2027. Chopra doubts India can achieve a clean sweep against Australia at home, calling it nearly impossible. Meanwhile, Australia and South Africa continue to dominate the table with impressive records.

Tough Road Ahead for India's WTC Qualification Hopes

Chopra expressed doubts about India's ability to reach the WTC final while speaking on his YouTube channel. With less than 50 percent points, the former opener believes the team faces an uphill battle. India must play series in Sri Lanka and New Zealand before hosting five Tests against Australia at home in 2027. He emphasized that securing maximum points against the former WTC champions Australia is next to impossible. Australia currently lead the table with a 100 percent record after four wins from four matches. South Africa hold 75 percent with three victories and one loss. India and South Africa will next meet in a three-match ODI series beginning in Ranchi on November 30.
