2 min read

Indian Test captain Shubman Gill addressed questions about Mohammed Shami's absence from the squad for the two-match Test series against South Africa. Despite Shami's impressive 15 wickets in three Ranji Trophy matches, he was not selected. Gill praised Shami's quality but emphasized that performances by Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna cannot be ignored. He stated that selectors are better positioned to decide on Shami's return based on upcoming series conditions. Gill highlighted the critical nature of the South Africa series for India's World Test Championship final qualification hopes. He acknowledged South Africa as a strong team, noting their champion status. Shami has been absent from Test cricket since June 2023 and last played internationally during the 2025 Champions Trophy, where he was India's joint-highest wicket-taker. The first Test begins in Kolkata against the World Test Champions.

Shubman Gill acknowledged there are not many bowlers of Shami's quality but stressed that performances from Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna deserve recognition. Gill emphasized the importance of the two-match series for India's WTC final qualification chances. He described South Africa as a very good team and champions, noting that India has handled difficult moments well. Gill added that the Kolkata pitch is a typical Indian wicket.
