Party leaders assess ground situation and meet legislators

2 min read

Senior BJP leaders arrived in Manipur on Wednesday for a three-day visit, sparking speculation about the formation of a new government in the state. BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh and Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra were received at Imphal airport by state party president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi and workers. The visit involves meetings with legislators and alliance partners to assess the political situation. Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13 this year, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh. He faced criticism over the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023. President's Rule has been extended until February 2026, but BJP legislators have been pressing for the restoration of a popular government reflecting people's aspirations.

Santhosh has been tasked with monitoring the mood within the state BJP unit through one-on-one interactions with MLAs and submitting a report to the national leadership. A closed-door meeting with BJP legislators was held at the party head office in Imphal, continuing late into the evening. N Biren Singh, the former chief minister, attended the meeting. The leaders did not comment publicly on their visit's purpose. MLA Kh Robindro told reporters that legislators demanded a government reflecting people's aspirations. He stated that MLAs want the central leadership to consider their opinions when selecting a leader, and the leadership assured them of consideration. Strategies for restoring BJP government were also discussed.
