2 min read

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced plans to build a cricket stadium in Darjeeling that will be named after Richa Ghosh, the 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batter who played a key role in India's victory at the 2025 Women's World Cup. The stadium will be constructed on a 27-acre plot and will honour Richa's exceptional performance in the tournament. During a felicitation event at Eden Gardens, Richa received West Bengal's highest civilian honour, Bangla Bhushan, along with a cash prize of INR 34 lakhs. She was also appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police and presented with a gold-plated bat and ball signed by Sourav Ganguly and Jhulan Goswami. If completed, Richa will become the first female Indian cricketer to have an entire stadium named after her, surpassing earlier tributes where stands were named after Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami.

Stadium to Inspire Future Generations

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee revealed that a cricket stadium will be established on 27 acres of land in Darjeeling and will be called the Richa Cricket Stadium. Banerjee explained that this initiative aims to preserve Richa's achievement for future generations and inspire young cricketers. The West Bengal government felicitated Richa at Eden Gardens, where she received the state's highest civilian award, Bangla Bhushan, and INR 34 lakhs in recognition of her crucial 34-run innings in the final against South Africa. Richa also received a Deputy Superintendent of Police appointment and a gold-plated bat and ball. She scored 235 runs across eight matches during the tournament, with a highest score of 94.
