Alyssa Healy ruled out of Sydney Sixers’ WBBL opener after thumb injury vs India

2 min read

Australia captain Alyssa Healy will miss Sydney Sixers' opening match of the Women's Big Bash League 2025 season due to a thumb injury. The wicketkeeper-batter suffered the injury during the Women's World Cup semi-final against India on October 30 at Navi Mumbai. While keeping wickets for fast bowler Kim Garth, a sharp top-edge from Jemimah Rodrigues' late cut struck the end of Healy's thumb. Despite visible pain, she continued playing without realizing the injury's severity. Sydney Sixers confirmed she would not travel to Perth for their season opener against Perth Scorchers on November 9 at WACA Ground. The club described the injury as minor but requiring rest. Healy will be monitored next week and may return early in the tournament if she can bat and keep wickets while wearing a splint.

Injury Details and Recovery Timeline

The injury occurred when Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues attempted a late cut shot while batting on 60 runs. The ball took a sharp top-edge and hit the end of Healy's thumb as she kept wickets up to the stumps. Speaking on the Willow Talk podcast after returning home, Healy appeared with her thumb in a splint. She acknowledged the incident, saying injuries are not uncommon for her during WBBL time. Sydney Sixers classified the injury as minor but confirmed she needs rest. The team will monitor her condition through the following week. Healy may return early in the tournament if comfortable batting and wicketkeeping with a splint on her injured thumb.
