Birmingham Phoenix have appointed Shane Bond as their new men's head coach on a two-year deal. The former New Zealand fast bowler replaces compatriot Daniel Vettori, who is moving to the newly rebranded Sunrisers Leeds. Bond brings extensive global franchise experience, having worked as a bowling coach in the IPL with Mumbai Indians (2015–2022) and Rajasthan Royals (since 2023). He has also held head coaching positions with Paarl Royals in the SA20 and Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League. This marks the first major decision under Birmingham Phoenix's new joint ownership by Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Knighthead Capital, the American investment firm that also owns Birmingham City Football Club. Performance director James Thomas, appointed in June, led the recruitment process and praised Bond's elite coaching credentials and tactical vision.

Bond's Vision and Connection to Birmingham

Shane Bond previously played for Warwickshire as an overseas player in 2002, taking 12 wickets in four appearances. This experience created a lasting bond with the club and city. Bond expressed his understanding of what it means to represent Birmingham on the Edgbaston pitch. He aims to instil this pride in his players and build an environment that breeds success. Bond wants his team to play a fearless and exciting style of cricket that delivers results for Birmingham Phoenix. The appointment strengthens the franchise's New Zealand connection, following Vettori's signings of Trent Boult, Adam Milne, and Tim Southee last season, though their return for 2026 remains uncertain.
