Angelina Jolie visits Ukraine border city facing Russian bombing, ‘rescues

2 min read

Hollywood actor and humanitarian Angelina Jolie made an unannounced visit to Kherson, a frontline city in southern Ukraine that faces ongoing Russian attacks. Ukrainian media reported the visit on Wednesday, marking her second trip to the war-torn country since the Russian invasion began. Photographs shared on social media showed Jolie wearing a bulletproof vest with Ukrainian insignia as she toured children's hospitals and maternity wards. One image captured her outdoors in armour and a helmet, while another showed her alongside a Ukrainian soldier. Kherson, briefly occupied by Moscow in 2022, continues to endure daily Russian bombardment and sits across the Dnieper River from Russian forces. Neither Jolie nor Ukrainian officials have officially confirmed the visit. Previously serving as a UN special envoy for refugees from 2012 to 2022, Jolie had visited Ukraine months after the invasion started, meeting displaced people in Lviv.

Bodyguard Drafted During Visit

Ukrainian media reports revealed unusual circumstances during Jolie's Kherson trip. She was accompanied by local bodyguards for security, but one of them was drafted into the Ukrainian Army while protecting her. According to reports, Jolie had to visit the conscription office herself to secure his release so he could continue providing security. The incident highlights the intense military mobilization efforts in Ukraine as the conflict continues. The visit came shortly after recent drone strikes hit Kherson. The city remains a dangerous zone, located directly across from Russian military positions on the opposite bank of the Dnieper River, making any civilian visit particularly risky and notable.
