When 14-Year-Old Zohran Guided His Mother’s Career Choice

2 min read

Zohran Mamdani made history on Tuesday by becoming the 111th mayor of New York City. At 33 years old, he is the city's first Muslim mayor and the first person of South Asian descent to lead New York in its 400-year history. Mamdani is the son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. Born in Uganda, he moved to New York at age seven and attended Bronx High School of Science and Bowdoin College in Maine. Before entering politics, he worked as a rap artist, on his mother's films, and as a foreclosure-prevention counselor at a nonprofit called Chhaya. His victory represents a significant win for the Democratic Party's progressive wing, as he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani has promised to restore power to the working class and resist the Trump administration.

When 14-Year-Old Zohran Guided His Mother's Career Choice

At the 2018 Jaipur Literature Festival, Mira Nair revealed an interesting story about her son's early wisdom. While preparing to shoot The Namesake, Warner Brothers offered her Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The studio had seen success with Alfonso Cuaron directing the third film and wanted Nair for the fourth. She was torn because she had already committed to adapting Jhumpa Lahiri's novel, a project deeply personal to her following her mother-in-law's unexpected death. When 14-year-old Zohran, who had learned to read through Harry Potter books, was asked for advice, he simply told his mother that many good directors could make Harry Potter, but only she could make The Namesake. His clarifying statement helped her choose.
