Singer Responds to Online Harassment Over Advocacy

2 min read

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada strongly responded to a social media user who mocked her experience of sexual harassment while questioning her concern for other women. The exchange occurred after a statement by her husband, actor Rahul Ravindran, about her choice to wear a mangalsutra gained attention online. The troll referenced her 2005 harassment incident involving lyricist Vairamuthu during a concert in Switzerland. Chinmayi, known for speaking out against violence toward women, condemned the user for using her traumatic experience to dismiss her advocacy. During India's #MeToo movement in 2018, she publicly accused Vairamuthu of sexual abuse and faced professional consequences, including removal from the South Indian Cine, Television Artistes and Dubbing Artistes Union. Chinmayi married Rahul Ravindran on May 5, 2014, and the couple has twins, Driptah and Sharvas, born on June 18, 2022.

The controversy began when Rahul Ravindran's comment about Chinmayi's personal choice regarding wearing a mangalsutra sparked debate online. Chinmayi expressed concern for women after witnessing angry reactions from men abusing her husband. A user then mocked her by bringing up the Vairamuthu incident, questioning why she worries about others when she allegedly could not protect herself. Chinmayi firmly rejected this, stating that blaming victims for harassment is wrong. She questioned why her molestation is repeatedly used against her and asked the user to disappear. Her courageous stand during the 2018 #MeToo movement led to professional backlash, including expulsion from SICTADAU after supporting women who accused union president Radha Ravi.
