The movie HAQ, starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi, is facing legal challenges just days before its scheduled release on November 7. The legal heirs of Shah Bano Begum have filed a petition in the Indore High Court demanding an immediate stay on the film's release. Through their advocate Tousif Warsi, the family argues that the filmmakers never sought permission or legal authorization to depict Shah Bano's life story. They claim the film offends Muslim community sentiments and presents Sharia law in a derogatory and misogynistic light. The family previously sent a notice accusing the producers of defamation and violation of personality and publicity rights. The High Court is expected to hear the case soon, with filmmakers represented by Hitesh Jain of Parinam Law and Ameet Naik of Naik & Naik. Despite the controversy, the film's trailer has received widespread appreciation and sparked significant public debate.

Family Demands Permission and Disclosure Before Release
Shah Bano Begum's legal heirs argue that the producers never obtained consent to portray her personal life on screen. Advocate Tousif Z. Warsi explained that since the movie runs over two hours and centers on Shah Bano's story, the family remains unaware of which events have been depicted or how they are represented. The family insists that the storyline and central theme must be disclosed to them before the film reaches theaters. They have also accused the filmmakers of defamation and violating personality and publicity rights. The petition further alleges that HAQ misrepresents Sharia law in a derogatory manner, potentially hurting sentiments within the Muslim community. The court hearing is awaited as the November 7 release date approaches.
