Family Claims Privacy Violation and Distorted Facts

2 min read

The upcoming legal drama Haq, starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, has landed in legal trouble just days before its theatrical release. The film, scheduled to release on November 7, is inspired by the landmark 1985 Shah Bano case concerning women's rights and maintenance laws in India. Shah Bano's family has alleged that the filmmakers violated their privacy by not obtaining consent before using her name and life story. Her daughter, Siddiqua Begum, filed a petition in the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking a stay on the film's release. The family also sent a legal notice demanding an immediate halt to all promotional activities. However, the producers maintain that the film is a fictional dramatization inspired by the Supreme Court judgment and a book titled 'Bano, Bharat ki Beti', with a clear disclaimer stating it is not a factual account.

Family Claims Privacy Violation and Distorted Facts

Siddiqua Begum's lawyer, Tauseef Warsi, argued that using someone's personal life and name without consent violates the right to privacy. Shah Bano's grandson, Jubair Ahmad Khan, stated that the family learned about the film only after the teaser was released. He expressed concern that many facts were distorted and that their private matter was given a commercial angle without permission. The family worries that audiences will believe the film portrays true events. Earlier, Siddiqua had sent a legal notice demanding an immediate stop to the publication, screening, promotion, or release of the film. The producers' lawyer, Ajay Bagadiya, countered that the film carries a disclaimer clarifying it is inspired fictional content, not a factual presentation.
