Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, the renowned cardiac surgeon and founder-chairman of Narayana Health, shared his inspiring journey of healing knee pain through yoga. Now 72 years old, he revealed that he began experiencing knee discomfort around the age of 55. Despite his background as a bodybuilder and martial artist in his younger days, persistent knee pain troubled him. Following his wife's persistent advice, he turned to yoga and practiced for just 2-3 months. The results were remarkable—the pain disappeared completely, and today he cannot even recall which knee was affected. Knee pain affects millions globally, often caused by arthritis, injuries, muscle weakness, poor posture, or excess weight. Yoga offers a natural, effective solution by improving flexibility, strengthening supporting muscles, and restoring body balance through gentle movements and proper alignment.

Yoga Exercises to Relieve Knee Pain

Yoga therapist Yash Fadnavis recommends several key practices for knee health. Start with 5-10 minutes of light warm-up like ankle rotations. Strengthen supporting muscles with Chair Pose (Utkatasana) for thighs and Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana) for hamstrings. Improve flexibility with Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana) and Reclined Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose (Supta Padangusthasana). Balance poses like Tree Pose (Vrikshasana) enhance knee stability. Use props such as folded blankets or blocks for support if needed. End sessions with Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani) to improve circulation. Practicing 3-4 times weekly with mindful breathing can significantly reduce knee pain. Gentle consistency brings lasting results without pushing through discomfort.
