RTI Act Turns 20: Report Shows Lapses in Implementation

The Right to Information (RTI) Act completes 20 years. A report by Satark Nagrik Sangathan reveals issues in its implementation. Two state information commissions are defunct. Three, including the Central Information Commission, lack chief commissioners. Many have vacant positions. This has led to a backlog of appeals. From to, 241,751 new appeals were registered. The existing backlog was 413,972. Only 182,165 cases were resolved in this period. The report highlights the need to fill vacancies and improve the RTI system's effectiveness.
