Turkey's national flag is rectangular and red with a white crescent moon and five-pointed star. The flag got official recognition. Its red color represents the blood of Turkish soldiers who died fighting colonial powers. The crescent moon has been on the flag since the 16th century. The star was added in 1793. Earlier versions had eight points for eight states of the Ottoman Empire. In 1936, the points were reduced to five. Turkey published official standards for the flag.
