New Delhi, September 25: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the addition of 10,023 MBBS and postgraduate medical seats in government colleges across India, with an investment of ₹15,034 crore. The move is aimed at improving medical education in India and addressing the shortage of doctors, especially in rural areas.
Officials confirmed that the expansion will cover both UG and PG levels, with seats allocated based on state-wise need and availability of teaching hospitals. Priority will be given to states with low doctor-population ratios. Experts hailed the decision as a “transformative step” to bring India closer to the WHO-recommended doctor-patient ratio of 1:1,000.
